Our standard

Beyond the minimum

Our shelters are committed to providing hope, support, and opportunity. They aim to exceed standards set by national and provincial regulatory bodies, are accredited by provincial housing authorities, and are operated by staff trained in trauma-informed care, conflict resolution, and cultural competency.

Safe and secure environment

Secure premises with controlled access, trained emergency staff, private and semi-private accommodation, and strict health standards.

Client-centred approach

Empathy, dignity, confidentiality, and services inclusive of every client's cultural, linguistic, and personal needs.

Supportive services

Case management for housing, mental health, and employment, plus workshops on financial literacy, job readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Equity and accessibility

Non-discriminatory, physically accessible facilities with emergency services operating around the clock.

Windmill Road Shelter

An emergency shelter for people of all genders, ages 19 and older. The shelter offers privacy cubicles, showers, and storage for those staying there.

Staff connect clients to community-based services and programming: housing support, harm-reduction supports, and individualized plans for each client.

The Halifax Forum

Unisex facility

The Halifax Forum

Opened January 22, 2024 at 6210 Young St, Halifax, the Forum accommodates 94 residents with dedicated spaces for 12 women and 82 men.

Since opening, the Halifax Forum has become an integral part of the community's efforts to address homelessness.

Transition Campus

The Akwaaba Rev. Wallace Smith Sr. Campus

Transition Campus

A safe, culturally authentic supportive housing complex providing African Nova Scotians and people of Black African ancestry with traditional and community-specific services.

Opened Spring 2024, this multi-unit transitional facility gives up to 33 residents the opportunity to achieve housing stability over 1.5 to 3 years, with a holistic, Christ-centred approach to care and wellbeing.
